As part of the 2011 Hammer In Randy Wolfe and George Neal of Bethel Forge, and Tony Baker did a “charcoal burn” for the fort. Charcoal is used in the forge daily at the fort but this was the first time that the charcoal was produced on site. The process took four days with the fire constantly tended. Air holes at the base of the pile permitted the correct draft. If done incorrectly the pile could be uncovered only to find a pile of ash. But in this case, with the professional team on board the result is evident in the photo of the wagon load of charcoal.
The smaller pile in the background is a “cut-away” pile to show how the pile was constructed. This was a great advantage for interpretation while the big pile was covered and burning.
