My father Donald "Tommy" Crawford found this powder horn in the bottom land somewhere near Lock 10 on the Kentucky River. He said the area where it was found had a "a few pieces" of an old building or buildings.
The few times that he mentioned the powder horn would be when we traveled the old road (Red House) toward Boonesborough Beach. We would pass the Lisle House on the left and, he would point to an area on the right side of the road, somewhere before we reached Boonesborough. He relayed that he was 15 years old when he found it, which would have made it 1952.
My father was an avid reader of pioneer adventure stories, and often left the powder horn on his book shelf. He passed away in 1982, and me and my wife Angela have had the powder horn in our possession since that time.
It has been on our bookshelf for over 30 years. We have often wondered if the powder horn was real or some kind of old toy.
In January 2015 while watching an old episode of the TV series Daniel Boone, I jokingly asked my wife if we should call Boonesborough to see if they could tell us anything about the old powder horn. My wife actually called and we were invited out.
When we arrived, Mr. Farmer, the Fort Manager, and a group of long rifle enthusiasts were here. To our surprise we found the old powder horn was not a toy.
